Fouzia Saeed has written extensively on Pakistani culture and social issues. Her 2001 ethnography of the walled city of Lahore, Taboo<\/i>, retains a cult following in five languages. In 2012, she came out with Working with Sharks<\/i> which chronicles the true story of her successful efforts to counter sexual harassment in her own career and continues to inspire many who work on this problem today. On Their Own Terms<\/i> describes four women\u2019s movements of early 21st century in Pakistan as this is the time she had been most active in leading women\u2019s movements through strategic activism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

T apestry traces the evolution of women\u2019s struggles throughout Pakistan\u2019s socio-political history. It brings to the younger generation the heritage of the brave women and their courageous movements as they fought against repression and social discrimination to achieve the rights and space we enjoy today. The book establishes the continuity of past struggles with those of today by building an understanding of their strategies as they evolved. The dominant strategic trends are referred to as \u2018Strands\u2019. Seven have been identifed and analyzed to improve our understanding of the ways women have modified their use of collective agency to match the political environment. Tapestry presents Pakistan\u2019s political history as the main context against which women\u2019s collective actions and the resultant reforms are presented. Close-ups of individual women are included to deepen the reader\u2019s understanding of womens\u2019 lives and the resistance they faced. These vignettes complement the description of the larger trends with the realities faced by individuals on the ground. Although not a thorough documentation of all the women and their movements, this book serves to introduce how women of different eras in Pakistan\u2019s history dealt with their own collective issues while building a base for the women of today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
